IAT Measures 1 Running head: IAT MEASURES Assessment of Individual Differences in Implicit Cognition: A review of IAT Measures
نویسندگان
چکیده
This review discusses basic features of Implicit Association Tests (IATs) that are relevant in order to estimate the suitability of IATs for the valid assessment of individual differences. We start with a description of the essential characteristics of the procedures of IATs and also refer to theoretical accounts for IAT effects. Then, we provide an overview of research on the psychometric properties of IATs including their reliability and incremental validity for the prediction of behavior over and above explicit measures. Finally, we describe some alternatives to IAT measures and offer an outlook to future research.

Using the implicit association test to measure age differences in implicit social cognitions.
Two studies investigated the use of the Implicit Association Test (IAT; A. G. Greenwald, D. E. McGhee, & J. L. K. Schwartz, 1998) to study age differences in implicit social cognitions. Study I collected IAT (implicit) and explicit (self-report) measures of age attitudes, age identity, and self-esteem from young, young-old, and old-old participants. Study 2 collected IAT and explicit measures o...

120 words) Instructed male and female participants to produce an altered response pattern on an Implicit Association Test (IAT) measure of gender identity by slowing performance in trials requiring the same response to stimuli designating own gender and self. Participants’ faking success was found to be predictable by a measure of slowing relative to unfaked performances. This “combined task sl...
متن کاملAssessment of implicit personality self-concept using the implicit association test (IAT): concurrent assessment of anxiousness and angriness.
This study explored the psychometric properties of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) when it is employed for the assessment of two personality traits within one sample. The sequence of an anxiousness and an angriness IAT was counterbalanced across 100 participants and the IATs' predictive validity for anxious versus angry behaviour after emotion inductions was examined and compared to direct ...
متن کاملRelations between implicit and explicit measures of attitudes and measures of behavior: evidence of moderation by individual difference variables.
The moderating role of individual difference variables (Self-Reported Habit Index [SRHI], Need for Cognition [NFC]) on relationships between implicit (Implicit Association Test [IAT], Extrinsic Affective Simon Test [EAST]) or explicit measures of attitude and behavior is assessed in two studies. A dissociation pattern is found on self-report diary measures of behavior. In Study 1, the EAST-beha...
متن کاملThe implicit association test outperforms the extrinsic affective Simon task as an implicit measure of inter-individual differences in attitudes.
We used both the Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (EAST) and the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as implicit measures of inter-individual differences in attitudes towards political parties (Experiment 1), food items (Experiment 2) and homosexuality (Experiment 3). IAT but not EAST scores were related in a meaningful manner to self-report measures of the corresponding attitudes (Experiments 1-3) a...
